Matrushka: a poem

4 Jun

Painted, wooden, grinning dolls

One inside another

Inside another

Inside another.

Twist to separate the biggest doll,

Top half from bottom half.

Then find someone similar inside her.

Twist, set aside and repeat

And repeat,

Until you reach the tiniest doll,

The first.

Amazing to think that all of those bigger, heavier, painted girls,

Contained little you.
